Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) was the inventor of the electronic flash tube. His photos of bullets passing through various objects, of shattering glass, and many other subjects, were very well known. Among the books that he published was one titled Flash!, which had 1939 and 1954 editions. I checked the book out from the library at my university for research on high-speed photography (I’m planning to edit the Wikipedia article on that subject), and was surprised and tickeled to find a photo of a female Phidippus jumping, by nature photographer Walker Van Riper. The photo is black and white, but most of the abdomen is colored. I found a reference to possibly the same photo on the Web, and the spider’s name was Sonja 🙂

Phidippus female – possibly the first published high-speed photograph of a leaping Jumping Spider.
